Sound Walk answers
- Were you able to find places and spaces where you could really listen? Yes, down in the parking structure in particular, you could hear all kinds of mechanical sounds
- Was it possible to move without making a sound? Yes, and no. Yes, if you were really quiet and had good shoes on you could move slowly, but it was extremely hard. In my sound walk, I incorporated my footsteps in the snow into my project.
- What happened when you plugged your ears, and then unplugged them? Everything was muffled.
- What types of sounds were you able to hear? List them. If your original notes are legible, and include all of the sounds you heard, then simply link to the scanned image(s). If not, retype them so that we can read them. Clink of keys, crunching in the snow, swooshing of the wind, people talking everywhere, people apologizing, humming of fans, screeching of cars, rumble of car starting, creak of door opening, bang of door slamming, quiet stomping of footsteps, rumbling cars, car honking horn
- Were you able to differentiate between sounds that had a recognizable source and those sounds you could not place? Yes, some sounds had very distinct noises, while others were harder to tell.
- Were you able to differentiate human, mechanical, and natural sounds? Yes, if u listen closely you can easily tell the difference.
- Were you able to detect subtleties, changes, or variations in the everpresent drone? Yes, mostly mechanical sounds seemed to change the everpresent drone of the city.
- Extremely close sounds? Sounds coming from very far away? Some sounds were extremely close, and loud, while others seemed to be coming from far away.
- Were you able to intervene in the urban landscape and create your own sounds by knocking on a resonant piece of metal, activating wind chimes, etc.? Yes, i heard many footsteps especially while walking on the metal stairs.
- Do you feel you have a new understanding or appreciation of the sounds of our contemporary landscape/cityscape? I never realized how many different sounds combine together in our everyday life. After taking this walk, I have a new respect for all of the individual sounds out there.
- How do you think your soundwalk experience will affect your practice as a media artist, if at all? My sound walk will help me to recognize the individual sounds/ pieces of my artwork
